Whether you’re travelling into York or venturing out and feeling a little peckish, there is no shortage of choice for places to eat within easy walking distance of the city’s station. We’ve rounded up 8 of the best. Check them out below – and happy eating! 

 

Fish & Forest 

 

Fish & Forest is a stylish, cosy restaurant serving up fresh, seasonal and very Instagrammable dishes made from sustainably sourced local ingredients. There isn’t a fixed menu, which is part of its charm, but you can always expect top seafood and game. Past dishes have included pan-fried skate wing, pheasant pithivier and grilled megrim sole. Do book in advance.

The Rattle Owl 

 

Looking for a fuss-free, high-quality and low-key dining experience? Then head to the Rattle Owl on Micklegate. You’ll find plenty of classics here – think wild bass, roasted cauliflower and rib of beef –as well as more creative options, such as a poached oyster or a sea trout rillette. A top restaurant for those not in a rush.

Dough Eyed 

 

 

Whether you’re a diehard traditionalist or you have more adventurous taste buds, Dough Eyed is a welcoming pizzeria that caters to all. Keep it simple with a reliable margherita or a napoletana, or opt for a pizza that features hummus, pea and mint cream, or  potato purée. There are plenty of drinks and desserts to choose from, too.

Based in a Grade II listed building, Skosh is all about snacks and small plates, which you can pick and choose from at your leisure. While the menu is often updated – it’s described as British with an international influence – expect snacks like Fujisan bread, tataki raw plates, okonomiyaki veggie dishes and venison meat bites.

Zaap Thai 

 

As soon as you step foot into Zaap Thai, you’ll feel as though you’ve been transported to the very heart of Bangkok –  the authentic decor and bustling atmosphere make the restaurant feel almost like you’re actually dining outdoors in southeast Asia by a street food stall. The menu is extensive, with an abundance of signature Thai dishes to choose from. It’s extremely veggie-friendly, too.

Partisan 

 

 

For an authentic taste of Italian cuisine,  Delrio’s Restaurant beckons. There is a big emphasis on tradition at the family-run eatery, from the homemade approach to cooking to the meals on offer – the menu features an enormous selection of quintessential Italian dishes that are made using locally sourced ingredients. It’s the ideal spot for a romantic meal or a crowd-pleasing family dinner.

Refectory Kitchen & Terrace 

 

As close to York station as it gets, Refectory Kitchen & Terrace delivers hearty dishes that will put a smile on your face, whether it’s the roast corn-fed chicken for the meat eaters or the roasted squash risotto for vegetarians. There’s a dedicated menu for children – which should satisfy even the fussiest of youngsters – and a well curated cheese menu.
