Am I eligible for a Family & Friends Railcard?
Up to 4 adults and 4 children can travel on the same Family & Friends Railcard, making it the perfect choice for family adventures or days out with friends.
To use your Family & Friends Railcard, at least 1 named adult and 1 child must travel together.
You can add 2 named adults to 1 Railcard. They don’t have to be related and they don’t have to travel together, but you must travel with at least 1 child to use your Family & Friends Railcard.
Travelling with kids under the age of 5
Kids under the age of 5 travel by train free – but you can still get 1/3 off adult tickets with your Family & Friends Railcard. Simply add 1 child ticket to your journey to lock-in your discount and save on tickets. A £1 minimum fare applies.Travelling with kids aged 5 to 15
Kids aged 5 to 15 get 60% off their tickets with the Family & Friends Railcard.Travelling with kids aged 15 to 16
Kids who turn 16 can still enjoy 60% off child tickets when they travel with 1 named adult on the Family & Friends Railcard.If you have a 1-year Railcard, kids aged 16 get 60% off until the Railcard expires.
If you have a 3-year Railcard, kids aged 16 get 60% off until the day before their 17th birthday.

How to buy your Family & Friends Railcard
Any adult (aged 16 or over) can buy a Family & Friends Railcard, there are no eligibility criteria.
You will just need a passport-style photo for each named card holder, if you are applying for a digital Railcard.
Any 2 adults can be named cardholders, and they can take up to 4 children with them. The second cardholder can be any adult that might spend time with your children such as a partner, friend, grandparent or childminder.
To buy online, visit the Family & Friends Railcard sales page and follow the instructions on screen. You will need to provide a passport-style photo for each named card holder.
For a digital Railcard
Once your online payment has been successful you will receive an email confirmation and acknowledgement of your application number (this confirmation cannot be used to buy discounted tickets).
We will then send you another email with an activation link to download your Railcard to the Railcard app.
For a physical Railcard
Please allow up to 10 days for standard delivery
Special Delivery orders placed before 5pm, Monday to Thursday, are delivered within 2 days
Special Delivery orders placed before 11am, Friday to Sunday, are delivered within 3 days
To buy your Family & Friends Railcard at a station, you will need to download and complete a Railcard application form and go to any staffed station ticket office to apply in person.

Any adult can buy a Family & Friends Railcard. To use it, at least 1 of the group travelling must be named on the Railcard and there must also be at least 1 child travelling on a child-rate ticket.
The named Family & Friends Railcard holder must travel for the entire journey with any passengers who have been bought discounted tickets.
To use your Family & Friends Railcard, at least 1 named adult and 1 child must travel together.

No. Railcard discounts are available throughout Britain but they are not available on tickets for morning peak period services on Mondays to Fridays for journeys wholly within the London & South East Network Railcard area. (The exceptions to this discounted fare rule are when you travel at weekends and on public holidays).
The times of morning off-peak services vary by route and are normally related to the availability of Off-Peak Day tickets. It’s best to check before buying your tickets.
Yes. As long as either you (as the main Railcard holder) or the second named Railcard holder is travelling with a child, up to a total of 4 adults and 4 children travelling together can get discounts.
Discounted price tickets purchased by a Family & Friends Railcard holder should be issued for travel for the same origin and destination and should normally be of the same ticket type (for example, all Off-Peak returns).
Yes! You can get 1/3 off an Anytime Day Travelcard if you’re travelling into London from outside London Zones 1 to 9. Anytime Day Travelcards have a minimum fare of £23.60.
Yes. If you have a second cardholder named on your Family & Friends Railcard they can also download the Railcard to their device.
All you need to do is share your activation link with them. They can then use the Railcard, even when you aren’t, provided they are travelling with a child age 5 to 15.
