What is a Disabled Persons Railcard?


A Disabled Persons Railcard help you save 1/3 on train tickets for you and 1 adult companion. Travel whenever you want with no time restrictions.

Get a 1-year Railcard for only £20 or save even more with a 3-year Railcard for just £54. That’s 3 years of discounted train tickets for you and an adult companion – guaranteed.

*Annual saving is based on the average savings made by combined Railcard holders between April 2025 and March 2026, excluding price of Railcard.

Travel with an adult companion

  • If you have a Disabled Persons Railcard, you’ll enjoy 1/3 off tickets for 1 adult companion travelling with you. The best part? Your adult companion doesn’t have to be the same person every time you travel.

Am I eligible for a Disabled Persons Railcard?

You can get a Disabled Persons Railcard if you get support for a disability or long-term medical condition.

If you’re aged 5 to 15 and have a disability: You’ll enjoy the standard lower price on child tickets, but you can use your Disabled Persons Railcard to save on tickets for an adult companion.

What documents do I need to get my Disabled Persons Railcard?

You’ll need to provide proof of disability support, like PIP or medical registration. Have a look at our list of eligible conditions to see what documents you will need to share.

You will need to provide: A copy of your award letter showing you are currently in receipt of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) or Adult Disability Payment (ADP).

You will need to provide: A copy of your award letter showing you are currently in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Child Disability Payment (CDP).

You will need to provide: Social Services official stamp in the space allocated on the Disabled Persons Railcard Online Application Form if applying online or on a paper application form

OR

A copy of your Certificate of Visual Impairment (CVI), BP1 Certificate (Scotland) or BD8 Certificate for being registered blind or partially-sighted.

You will need to provide: Social Services official stamp in the space allocated on the Disabled Persons Railcard Online Application Form if applying online or on a paper application form

OR

A copy of the front page of your NHS battery book, a copy of your dispensing prescription or other evidence that you are deaf or use a hearing aid from an official health provider or local authority.

You will need to provide: A copy of a document from a health professional showing you have epilepsy AND a copy of your prescription for drugs.

You will need to provide: A copy of a letter from DVLA or a health professional stating you are unable to drive on medical grounds – it must be dated within the last 2 years.

You will need to provide: A copy of your award letter showing you are currently in receipt of Armed Forces Compensation Scheme (AFCS) benefit.

You will need to provide: A copy of your award letter showing you are currently in receipt of Industrial Injuries Benefit for 20% degree of disablement or higher. 

You will need to provide: A document from a health professional showing you are without speech.

What travel discounts can I get with a Disabled Persons Railcard?

  • Valid any time of day

  • Ticket types included:

    • Standard and First Class Anytime (Day, Single, or Return)

    • Standard and First Class Off-Peak (Day, Single, or Return)

    • Standard and First Class Super Off-Peak (Day, Single, or Return)

    • Standard and First Class Advance

  • In and around London:

    • Oyster pay as you go Off-Peak single fares and daily caps (National Rail, London Underground and Docklands Light Railway) for cardholder only

    • Most Travelcards

    • Anytime Day Travelcards when bought as part of your ticket from outside London Zones 1 to 9 (subject to minimum fare of £23.60)

    • Gatwick Express, Stansted Express and Heathrow Express

  • Caledonian Sleeper tickets – Club Solo or Classic Solo rooms and seated products

  • PlusBus day tickets

  • Combined rail to sea journeys:

    • some rail/sea journeys with Wightlink and Red Funnel Ferries to stations on the Isle of Wight

    • Hovertravel services to and from Ryde Hoverport

    • Stena Line ferries to the Republic of Ireland.

    • discount is only available on tickets as part of a journey from/to a National Rail station or on combined rail/sea journeys from/to Ryde Hoverport

  • Rover tickets and Ranger tickets

Special concession

A Disabled Persons Railcard holder travelling on Oyster pay as you go can get 1/3 off an Off-Peak Day Travelcard for Zones 1 to 6 (including stations in London Zones 7 to 9 if required) for 1 adult companion travelling with them.

Travel together

The adult accompanying person must travel with the Railcard holder for the whole duration of the journey.

Ticket purchasing restriction

If the Disabled Persons Railcard holder is travelling on a Disabled Persons Freedom Pass, Centro Concessionary Pass or any other concessionary pass offering free travel, they cannot use their Disabled Persons Railcard to buy a discounted ticket for an adult accompanying person.

How to buy your Disabled Persons Railcard

To buy a Disabled Persons Railcard, you will need to provide proof of your disability to verify your eligibility online, and a passport-style photo.


Check if you are eligible for a Disabled Persons Railcard.

To buy online, visit the Disabled Persons Railcard sales page and follow the instructions on screen. You will need to provide proof of your disability and a passport-style photo. 


For a digital Railcard

Once your online payment has been successful you will receive an email confirmation and acknowledgement of your application number (this confirmation cannot be used to buy discounted tickets).


After your application has been checked, which can take up to 5 working days, we will then send you another email with an activation link to download your Railcard to the Railcard app. 


For a physical Railcard

  • Please allow up to 15 days for standard delivery

  • Special Delivery orders placed before 5pm, Monday to Thursday, are delivered within 7 days

  • Special Delivery orders placed before 11am, Friday to Sunday, are delivered within 8 days

Yes! Children aged 5 to 15 can use a Disabled Persons Railcard to get 1/3 off tickets for 1 adult companion.


While the Disabled Persons Railcard does not offer discounts on child tickets, all children aged 5 to 15 get 50% off train travel as standard.

Yes! You and 1 adult companion can get 1/3 off Off-Peak Day Travelcards and Anytime Day Travelcards if you’re travelling into London from outside London Zones 1 to 9. Anytime Day Travelcards have a minimum fare of £23.60.

You can also load your Railcard discount onto an Oyster card and get 1/3 off Single Peak and Off-Peak pay as you go fares on London Underground and Docklands Light Railway. The Oyster card must registered in your name and the discount only applies to the Railcard holder.

Load your Disabled Persons Railcard discount onto your Oyster card

Simply take your Railcard and Oyster card to any staffed London Underground station, Oyster Ticket Shop or Visitor Centre. A team member will help you load your Railcard discount onto your Oyster card.

If you use a Disabled Person’s Freedom Pass

If you already use a Disabled Person’s Freedom Pass for travel in and around London, you won’t be able to use your Disabled Persons Railcard discount on travel within the city.

Yes! You can use your Disabled Persons Railcard to buy train tickets for 1 adult companion travelling with you on the same journey.


Your adult companion does not have to be the same person every time you travel, but they do have to travel with you for the whole journey to enjoy discounted tickets.

No, your Disabled Persons Railcard does not cover Eurostar services.


However, Eurostar does offer discounted fares to passengers travelling with a wheelchair, and you can book accessible travel support before your journey begins. Visit the Eurostar Accessible Travel hub to find out more.
